1.Collections overviews are intended primarily as internal documents to advise the staff about the complex, rich, and diverse collections of the Library.collections overviews為一份提供館員有關複雜、豐富及各種的館藏之建議文件

2.It is hoped that the overviews also may be of interest to a wider community of librarians, researchers, and potential patrons of the Library’s collections.此文件希望可帶給更廣泛的圖書館員、研究者、及潛在的贊助者對館藏有更多的興趣

3.美國國會圖書館有超過138萬件的館藏

4.美國國會圖書館的徵集自1800年來皆不論形式、語言、或主題學科；唯有the areas of clinical medicine 或 technical agriculture，因它們為the National Library of Medicine and the National Agricultural Library所負責

美國國會圖書館應擁有下列三類館藏：

(1)All books and other library materials necessary to the Congress and the various officers of the Federal Government to perform their duties.
(2)All books and other materials that record the life and achievement of the American people.
(3)Records of other societies, past and present, especially of those societies and peoples whose experience is of the most immediate concern to the people of the United States.
